"Any foreigner will notice the Afghans' love for flowers. I believe that the more violence there is somewhere, the greater the need for beauty. And flowers are always beauty, and such beauty is accessible. Anyone can grow it even on the smallest piece of land - and that is what the Afghans do." When French journalist Oriane Zerah first arrived in Afghanistan in 2012, she fell in love with it and returned in 2019 with her own project, Afghanistan: Roses under the Thorns*. The foreign press portrayed the country in dark tones, but Oriane decided to fix that. For several years, she took portraits of locals holding flowers, showing the resilience of the Afghans, who have not forgotten how to appreciate beauty after decades of war.
